Charlie pays a visit!
Former student Charlie Rae Allen recently paid a visit to New College Worcester, so we took the opportunity to catch up with him!

Charlie studied at NCW for four years, achieving his GCSE’s and A Levels, and is now at Queen’s University Belfast where he is studying Spanish and Portuguese!
How is life at University?
I’m really enjoying the course, and life in independent living is going really well. I live in student accommodation – my own flat in a block with other students, so I have my own space but also feel part of a small community.
I use my cane which has made navigating around new and unfamiliar places much easier, especially when I started.
The university has been accommodating to my needs, for example when taking my exams I have had these made accessible in large print.
I feel that I’ve taken everything in my stride and NCW really helped me prepare for life after college and further independence.
What was your most memorable moment at New College Worcester?
It would be when I was Head Boy in 2018, my last year. It was great to develop and build on working relationships with staff and organisations. Being Head Boy also really helped boost my confidence, and gave me a much bigger sense of responsibility. – this actually assisted me with my case when applying to university, as there were a few things that needed adapting.
I often need to request things to be made accessible and have to talk to many people to get this done – something that I was definitely not used to doing at NCW. However, my skills and the confidence that I gained from NCW really helped me.
What are your future aspirations?
I would love to work in the Translation sector, or maybe work for an embassy.
What is your best advice for former students?
I would say that if you are hoping to go to University, definitely find one that connects with you and don’t be afraid to ask for help! Push yourself out of your comfort zone, and try new things. Use your mobility and independence skills, as you will certainly be one of the more able when you move away to university than many of the other students.
